Day Two: Washington DC - Myrtle Beach, SC - Saturday, February 13th

Day #2 route
On the second day of travel, we drove from Washington DC to Myrtle Beach, SC. It was a long day in the car because we traveled 428 miles.  During our trip, we visited three more states - Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

As we were leaving Washington DC, we drove past a couple more Washington DC sites.  We were able to get a little closer to the US Capitol Building (well....sort of - as you can see there are huge fences around the building and military vehicles for security purposes). We also passed by the Pentagon Building which is the headquarters for our country's Department of Defense.  Can you guess how many sides the Pentagon building has?

Everyone was a little disappointed that the weather was kind of yucky during our trip.  There was a lot of snow that made driving difficult for my dad and there was also a lot of rain that made it tough to see the sites as we traveled through the different states.

Snowy travel

My mom was also very disappointed because she likes to take a picture of the "Welcome to" signs as we enter a new state, but the rain made it impossible to take nice pictures.

Believe it or not, somewhere between those
raindrops is a "Welcome to North Carolina" sign.

Still very rainy, but you can sort of see the
"Welcome to South Carolina" sign

Once we left Washington DC, the rain limited our desire to stop and explore.  The only thing we really saw was a HUGE roadside attraction travel stop called South of the Boarder.  South of the Border is a large complex of buildings that spread over 350 acres of land (that would be about the size of the entire Heights neighborhood in Tariffville).  There are restaurants, souvenir shops and silly statues for photo opportunities.  This roadside attraction has been around for a very long time as my mom remembers going there when she was a kid too.  The fun thing about South of the Border is that they advertise with huge billboards for miles and miles along the interstate.  In fact, the billboards started as soon as we left Virginia and could be seen all through North Carolina, but you don't arrive at South of the Border until you get to South Carolina.  In order to break the car ride boredom, my mom said that she would give $5 to the first person that saw a billboard. I won!!  To be honest, South of the Border wasn't exactly the most exciting travel stop, but it was something to see on a rainy day.

I saw the first sign!
There were over 100 billboards!
This South of the Board sign is 104 feet tall!
There were a bunch of silly photo opportunities inside

Lastly, when my mom had planned our travel stops, we pictured being able to take an evening walk on the beach in Myrtle Beach, but it was pouring rain and only about 45 degrees.  We all agreed that a walk on the beach in that type of weather would've been miserable.  As much as it sounds like there was so much to be disappointed about, we were grateful to reach our  second day's destination safely and we made the best of the situation knowing that sunshine and warmer temperatures were down the road.  We had a quiet evening in Myrtle Beach by visiting the hotel pool and ordering up some pizza for dinner.
Yay for pizza in the Myrtle Beach hotel room

I ended my day with a swim in the pool
